Resin Horsehair jewellery – New additions

I thought I would highlight the new additions to my range of resin horsehair jewellery that I have made recently. I love working with horsehair within resin jewellery because of the lovely effects that can be achieved with the hair. Initially when I receive a sample of horsehair, it appears to be a single colour (brown/black), however after working with the individual strands of hair, I soon appreciate the beautiful variations of colours to the hair.

The following are a few of the custom-made resin horsehair jewellery items that I have recently made.

Horseshoe bracelet charm containing horse hair

I was asked by Sharon towards the end of last year if I could set a small amount of horse hair within a bracelet charm that would be suitable for a Thomas Sabo charm bracelet.

The bracelet charm was going to be a gift for her friend whom tragically lost her horse last summer. Unfortunately, they only managed to get a few strands of tail hair at the time, however this was more than sufficient for me to make an item of jewellery with it.

After a little investigation I discovered that Thomas Sabu made a horseshoe style bracelet charm, so I suggested making something similar to contain the hair. This is the horseshoe shaped bracelet charm that I made for her, containing the hair from her friend’s horse.

I encased a few strands of the hair with clear resin inside a sterling silver horseshoe shaped pendant bezel and then attached a sterling silver lobster clasp clip.

I have been quite busy this month making resin bracelet charms containing horse hair. Here is an example of coloured resin bracelet charms that I recently made. Again, my customer only had a few strands of horse hair that they were able to send to me however this was more than sufficient to make a couple of small resin oval shaped charms. I coloured the bracelet charms blue and green and criss-crossed the horse hair throughout the resin.

I really enjoy working with horse hair in my resin jewellery because of the amazing effects that you can create with it, for example, the criss-crossing of the horse hair in resin often resembles rutilated quartz.

Many thanks for reading!

Horse Hair Jewellery

Traditionally horse hair jewellery has been associated with the braiding of horse hair into patterns, commonly made to form bracelets. Beading, ribbons or other embellishments are also incorporated with the hair to further personalise the item of jewellery. There is some speculation as to the history of this art form, some suggest that it dates back to 8th century Spain and there has also been evidence throughout history including Cowboys, Indians and even prison inmates during the mid-1800s used to pass the time braiding horse hair.

Horse hair jewellery has great sentimental value to its owner and is often worn in remembrance to a horse that has sadly passed on. You can find some great examples of braided horse hair jewellery at Tailendjewellery.

In January 2010 I made my first piece of horse hair jewellery by incorporating the hair into a resin pendant for a friend. Since that first pendant I have made many items of jewellery containing horse and pony hair so that the owners can carry a piece of their treasured friend.

There have been the colourful...

...and everything from cufflinks, pendants, bracelets, key rings, brooches and stock pins containing horse’s hair.

The main advantage that this style of horse hair jewellery has over the traditional braided form of jewellery is that very little hair is required. I have in fact made pendants in the past containing literally one or two strands of hair that had been discovered on a grooming brush after a horse had unfortunately passed on.

Another advantage is that the horse hair is encased within resin and therefore is not exposed to the touch. Lots of beautiful effects can be created with the hair and other objects or colours included to further personalise the items of jewellery.

So there is my take on a traditional form of jewellery that has been given my Shpangle approach. Almost every order I receive for horse hair jewellery is different to the last and most new requests ask for something that little bit different. I originally used the glass vials below as pendants and charms for my name on rice jewellery, however recently a customer requested one to hold a small amount of her horses hair. Isn’t it also funny how things evolve from one craft to another?

Horse Hair Jewellery Giveaway

I have been making horse hair jewellery for quite some time now and thought it was time to bring out a new range of jewellery for the horse owner. Unlike the traditional braided horse hair jewellery, my jewellery actually uses very little hair; approximately one to two inches of hair the thickness of a pencil is more than sufficient for any of my pendant designs.

For my new range of horse hair jewellery I am looking to use longer strands of hair to incorporate into my designs. And this is the reason for the giveaway. If you are a horse owner, or know of a horse owner who can supply me with a few (maybe six) strands of tail hair (approximately twelve inches long and preferably dark in colour), I will then send you the finished prototype piece of jewellery that I make with it free as a thank you!

I will only be making one prototype for my new range of horse hair jewellery and therefore will be selecting at random the winner of the giveaway (assuming more than one person enters that is!).

The rules of this giveaway are simple. If possible please follow this blog (Using the ‘Join this site’ button located on the right of the page). Then leave a comment on this blog, maybe letting me know why you would like a piece of my horse hair jewellery and how I can contact you if you are the winner.

This giveaway will end at midday on the 11th November 2011 (which incidentally is my wife’s birthday). Good Luck!

More horse hair jewellery keepsakes

I have been quite busy this week with several orders for horse hair pendants. I really do love to incorporate horse hair into jewellery as not only does it give fantastic results, it really does give a keepsake for the recipient to treasure forever.

The heart pendant takes about a week to make. I build the pendant up with three or four layers over several days. Within each layer and using tweezers I place each individual hair down, this can be quite fiddly but it ensures that each horse hair has been placed with care and respect. The finished pendant has an effect almost like rutile quartz and is fascinating to look at.

For the teardrop pendant I take some of the horse hair and tie with thread at one end. This is then placed into semi-cured resin and left to cure over night. It is then finished with a further two or three layers of resin and left for several days to cure. The pendant is then sanded, drilled and jewellery findings attached. I really like this pendant as I think the shape of the horse hair really does compliment the teardrop shape of the pendant.

These are the first two orders for horse hair jewellery I have completed this week. For the first pendants, the hair was taken from the horse’s mane and layered within resin hearts.

For these pendants the hair was taken from the horse’s tail and set within resin heart and teardrop pendants. At first glance the hair appeared to be a lovely chocolate brown in colour when in fact on closer examination it was actually lots of different shades of browns, blocks and even yellow.

Horsey horsey don't you stop

This is my 1st blog entry for 2010 so I'll start by wishing you all a Happy New Year and hope that 2010 will bring everything that you wish for. This is also my first custom order for the New Year and it was quite a fun one to do!

A lady wanted some hair from her horse (the horse is named Madonna aka Boo), preserved within a resin pendant. The hair was taken from the horses tail (it was due for a cut anyway) and one thing that struck me was just how coarse the hair was...it certainly took quite a bit of effort to get the scissors through it!

Anyway, I made two pendants and couldn't decide on which one I preferred so I gave her both...as you can imagine she was very pleased. They certainly look unusual and quite classy in an ‘out of the ordinary’ sort of way. For the heart shaped pendant, I took 2cm strips of the horse hair and embedded them quite randomly within the resin, building the pendant up in several layers. For the teardrop shaped pendant, I took a clump (not sure if that is the right word to use) of the horse hair and tied one end with black nylon thread before embedding it in the centre of the pendant.

I have already added a page to my website that describes preserving locks of hair and have now extended it to include horse hair keepsake jewellery.
