I was contacted recently by a gentleman who had a champagne cork form a special celebration (along with a silver 2025 sixpence coin). He wanted both the cork and sixpence coin setting inside a resin cube paperweight and this was his initial design:

Unfortunately, at the time, I did not have experience of making a paperweight large enough to accommodate the cork, however he wanted me to persevere with possible designs. I managed to source a cube paperweight mould large enough to accommodate the cork and coin and this is the completed paperweight:

The resin cube paperweight measures 6.5cm and is a lovely size to hold the champagne cork, with the silver sixpence embedded into the top of the cork. The cork is positioned at an angle within the paperweight, so that the coin date can be easily read from the top. It also resembles a cork that has recently been popped and suspended mid-flight.
What a lovely way to preserve and display a champagne or wine bottle cork from a special occasion. This could be from a special birthday, wedding or engagement, birth of a child or from toasting any other special occasion. I could also set the metal caps from the champagne bottles inside the paperweights. A gorgeous keepsake for the special occasion.
Did you know that there are collectors of bottle corks. Unlike collectors of other items, for example stamps or coins, cork collecting isn’t given a specific term, generally only knows as ‘cork collecting.’ However, the collecting of champagne bottle caps is placomusophilia, and a collector is a placomusophile.
